The Outskirts

This page is work in progress BUT....if you're looking to escape the city for a few hours or a couple of days, here's some options.

Cape Cod

Ahhh, the Cape of Cod. Just a 90 minute drive from Boston. Or 6 hours if you leave on Friday at 4PM (JK, but not really) Seriously, just think it through before you go. If you don't have a particular destination in mind, may I suggest the Boston to Provincetown ferry? Provincetown is artsy, LGBTQ+-friendly, has great beaches (like Race Point and Herring Cove), and a lively downtown. Ferries run pretty regularly between mid-May & mid-October and for roughly 100-150 bucks round trip, you save yourself a LOT of headaches. Try these guys here, City Cruises. Some of the other more popular destinations are: Chatham. A classic Cape town with a charming main street, lighthouse, and seal sightings. Wellfleet. Known for oysters, art galleries, and nature (don’t miss the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary) Hyannis. More commercial, but has JFK connections and good ferry access to the islands. Sandwhich. The oldest town on the Cape, with colonial charm and the lovely Sandwich Boardwalk. Thinking beaches? How about one of these? Coast Guard Beach (Eastham) – Often ranked among the best in the U.S. Old Silver Beach (Falmouth) – Warm water and great for sunsets. Marconi Beach (Wellfleet) – Dramatic cliffs and big surf.

Salem

Most of you won't listen to me when I say....DO NOT GO TO SALEM IN OCTOBER! I mean you CAN but, it's an absolute madhouse. You've been warned. First off, once again, going to recommend the ferry here. Same guys as linked above too. Salem is great and there's a lot more than just witches. But I know, you're going for the witches! However, if you're a museum lover or even just appreciate them then you MUST visit the Peabody Essex Museum. It's one of the oldest and best art museums in the U.S., with a global collection and cool rotating exhibits.

These pages are designed in hopes to give you a general lay of the land. I try to stay away from talking about the bigger attractions and focus more on the "lesser known" things and the "FREE STUFF". I hope you find it useful. -Crafty
