CHINATOWN
Boston’s Chinatown is a dynamic and historic neighborhood that serves as the cultural heart of the city’s Chinese and East Asian communities. Located in downtown Boston, Chinatown is bordered by the Financial District, Downtown Crossing, the Theatre District, and the South End. It is the only remaining historic Chinatown in New England and is one of the few in the entire East Coast, making it a crucial center for Asian-American culture, commerce, and cuisine. The area is adorned with murals, Chinese-style architecture, and the iconic Chinatown Gate (on Beach Street), a large paifang (traditional Chinese archway) that welcomes visitors with stone lions guarding its entrance. The gate, inscribed with the Chinese phrase “天下为公” (meaning “the world is for all”), symbolizes the neighborhood’s communal spirit.
Theatre District

Boston’s Theatre District is truly a gem. Located in the heart of the city, it is lively and vibrant and known for its rich performing arts scene, stunning historic theaters, and dynamic nightlife. Located between Boston Common, Chinatown, and Downtown Crossing, the district is home to Broadway-style productions, local performances, comedy shows, and live music, making it a must-visit destination for theater lovers and entertainment seekers. If you're thinking about a show while in town here are some of the major and iconic theatre choices you might want to look up. The Wang Theatre- Originally built in 1925, this grand theater is one of the largest and most elegant performance spaces in Boston, hosting Broadway shows, concerts, and dance performances. The Shubert- A historic venue known as the "Little Princess" of Boston theaters, featuring plays, musicals, and ballet performances. The Colonial Theatre – The oldest continuously operating theater in Boston, dating back to 1900, it frequently hosts Broadway previews before they hit New York. The Emerson Cutler Majestic Theatre – A beautifully restored theater owned by Emerson College, featuring opera, theater, and classical performances. The Wilbur Theatre – Primarily known for stand-up comedy, this venue attracts top comedians from around the world. The Charles Playhouse – Home to the world-famous Blue Man Group and the long-running mystery show Shear Madness. Also, over on Washington Street just before Downtown Crossing you'll find the Paramount and the Opera House. I'd be remiss if I also didn't give a shout out to a Boston Icon, Nick's Comedy Stop on Warrenton St. If you're around on a Friday or Saturday night, it's a great place to catch up and coming and established, local comedians.
Crafty's Eats: Ok, so I'm going to be perfectly honest here, I don't eat much in Chinatown. Or, never, really. However, I am willing! So, if you'd like to take me out here, just ask:) Also, what a wonderful opportunity for you to tell me what I can recommend to future visitors. Just email me here. Or, DM me on Instagram.
Crafty's Eats: Steps from the beginning of the Theatre District on Columbus is Maggiano's Little Italy. It's fantastic! Get the meatballs. I'll also recommend the Nash Bar on Tremont Street. Pub food with a southern twist that's definitely solid but good live tunes on the weekends, line dancing mid-week and now, stand-up comedy on Tuesdays. Yee Haw!
These pages are designed in hopes to give you a general lay of the land. I try to stay away from talking about the bigger attractions and focus more on the "lesser known" things and the "FREE STUFF". I hope you find it useful. -Crafty
